CALL FOR PAPERS: Special Issue on Space and Time

Guest Editor: Peter M. Hall

Space and time are basic dimensions of societies and social life. Henri Lefebvre wrote they are distinctive but inseparable. Both together are infrequently addressed and separately have received le attention than they merit. Interactionists have contributed more to temporality than spatiality. Globalization, cyberspace, economic crises, and environmental challenges make imperative examining these developments in terms of space and time. Recent scholarship across a number of disciplines has addressed some of these issues. (For example, see the works of Henri Lefebvre, Barbara Adam, Doreen Massey, Robert Hassan, and Setha Low) Some even framed their work as social constructionist or pragmatist. Interactionists have not engaged this conversation. We have the perspective, concepts, and tools to contribute to this essential social domain and critical global issues. This call is intended to stimulate our entry into those discussions

The special issue seeks papers that a) combines both space and time in their framework, b) makes contributions to the interactionist perspective by theorizing either temporality or spatiality, c) examines social processes or contexts across space and time, d) presents research on the above issues, and e) presents research that problematizes space and/or time. Some terms that may be suggestive, but not exhaustive, of paper topics are:

1 Social production/social construction

2 Landscapes,nature, environment

3 Space and place, place attachment

4 Timescapes, temporalities, institutional time

5 Rhythms, tempos, cycles

6 Spatial and temporal inequality

7 Disaster, disruption, displacement

8 Territory and history

9 Sacred and mundane

10 Deep time

Papers should follow the usual authors’ guidance for Symbolic Interaction and be submitted through http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/si no later than 1 November 2014. Please indicate in the cover letter that the paper is intended for the special issue. It is expected that this issue will appear in February 2016 but papers will be published on Early View as they complete the review process during 2015. Informal inquiries about the fit of a proposed paper with the special issue may be made to Peter Hall through Peter.Hall@colostate.edu
